Public stairs

Seeking heights

“Design and detail an external staircase with a signaling function that, on the one hand, provides access to the exhibition hall in an obvious manner and, on the other hand, gives a new face to (the entrance to) the Zuiderpershuis.”
The design of the stairs is based on the organic shape of leaves. The leaves refer to the park across the museum. The organic curved shape of the stairs creates a little citygarden between the stairs. The stairs curves across the tree as leaves do. Corten steel as the primary material refers to the previous function of the museum being a hydraulic power station. All of this makes ‘seeking heights’ an eye-catcher for the public.

  • Circulation

Circulation is crucial in interior design for a self-service restaurant to ensure efficient flow of customers. Well-planned layouts prevent congestion, enhance customer experience, and optimize staff operations. It fosters a smooth and enjoyable dining atmosphere.

  • location

Branding is vital in restaurant interior design, especially for 'mesa,' a Spanish-themed eatery with a self-service concept. It helps convey the restaurant's identity, emphasizing its Spanish roots and communal dining experience. Effective branding enhances customer recognition and fosters a cohesive and memorable ambiance.

  • competition

On Thursday, March 5, the thirteen were presented to an external jury, including architect-artist Maximiliaan Royakkers (Brussels), interior designer and product designer Arnaud De Vicq from studio Boite (Leuven), architect-furniture designer Dries Van Nieuwenbergh from Objekt Architecten (Aalst) and graphic designer and architectural photographer Stefan Tilburgs from Studio Wasabi (Antwerp)
