DESIGN FOR play, promote intergenerationality

In our current society a lot of young people and older adults are suffering from social isolation and loneliness. Especially the last couple of years due the pandemic. The project RondomOns aims to create a space for intergenerational interaction, play and inclusion in Vrijbroekpark. The solution includes the design of a conversation path, historical question boards and a multifunctional amphitheater.

GENERAL DESIGN CHALLENGE

Vrijbroekpark’s dream is to be a park that welcomes all people, a park that is accessible to diverse groups without physical and social barriers. This project aims to design services and experiences for Vrijbroekpark to make it inclusive; a welcoming park for families, people from different backgrounds, preferences and with all capacities to learn, play and grow together.

  • Conversation path

An interactive and social route. The conversation path connects the play area and the petanque fi eld and provides rest areas and signs encouraging conversation. The end point of the path is the amphitheatre.

  • Modular and scalable system

Our extensive research shows that many school buildings are not future-proof, lacking adaptability, scalability and adjustability to meet evolving student needs. Our design includes a modular building blocksystem that empowers schools to embrace a future-proof approach.

  • Amphitheater

A multifunctional meeting spot. An amphitheater is a versatile, interactive gathering space for events, performances, and community use.

The process

The project’s design process involved researching user needs, developing and evaluating design options, engaging with the community, and testing and iterating the design to ensure inclusiveness. The research included interviews and observations, and the design process included community feedback.

Inclusive solutions

The Vrijbroekpark has a new service system that promotes intergenerational interaction and play for all ages and abilities. The system features rest areas with various seating options and organized events such as sports games, music shows, and community gaming events that are inclusive and accessible with features like wheelchair accessibility, sensory play, and assistive devices. Visitors can expect a sense of community and connection with others, as well as opportunities for socialization and play.
